On Saturday, June 13, 2021, approximately 25 Maryland growers met at Catoctin Breeze Vineyard (CBV) in Thurmont for Summer Field Day. The audience included new growers to those who have been growing for more than 20 years. Presenters were Dave Myers, Joseph Fiola, Ph.D. and Menjun Hu, Ph.D. of the University of Maryland Extension program. After a brief welcome by MGGA President Wick Dudley and CBV owner Voytek Fizyta, Dave Myers presented updates on pesticide safety. Daniel Larason, CBV vineyard manager, then led the group on a two-hour tour of CBV’s vineyards. He, Joe, and Mengjun discussed cultivar challenges, pruning decisions, nutrient management, and canopy management.
Lunch from The Farmhouse was generously provided by Tom Walsh of Nutrien who provided pesticides through the MGGA Pesticide Purchase Program. Fiola followed with his traditional blind cultivar tasting of eight wines. Mengjun Hu discussed grape vine trunk diseases and Crown Gall. Finally, Joe Fiola followed with a discussion on vineyard nutrition, nutrient management plans, and implementation.
The day concluded with a tasting of five of CBV’s wines and a tour of the winery and tasting room.
