Capitol Hill Update This week, both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees continued their budget oversight duties for the Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) cycle, with numerous hearings and briefings with Biden officials. Both chambers will be out for recess for the next couple of weeks, giving staff a moment to organize their Appropriations requests before upcoming Committee deadlines. Adding to the Senate’s to-do list is finding a path forward on consideration of $10 billion for COVID-19 funding relief that would be used to restock our nation’s supply of vaccines, testing, therapeutics, and more. The effort, led by Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), fell apart this week due to Republican opposition. The opposition comes from the Biden Administration’s recent repeal of Title 42, a pandemic-related restriction that allows border authorities to quickly expel migrants in the name of public health. Republicans demanded an amendment vote to address this policy change, which was reported to have bi-partisan support. This resulted in the legislation being sidelined until after the two-week recess as the Senate quickly pivoted to confirming Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first African American female to sit on the nation’s highest court as a Supreme Court Justice. |
