August 2024 Grower Highlight – Tyler Williamson of Long Beach Farms
Maryland’s wine industry is one of inspiration and ingenuity. There are many growers who are well-deserved to be recognized, so that is just what I am going to do each month! Once a month, a Maryland grape grower will be highlighted to tell their story, give them a platform to speak to what they feel is important in the industry or to take the opportunity and discuss whatever they would like!
This month, we’re highlighting Tyler Williamson, the farmer behind Long Beach Farms, located in Bowleys Quarters, Baltimore County. Tyler’s journey into grape growing began as a tribute to his ancestors and a commitment to preserving farmland in a predominantly suburban area. His small-scale, diverse operation is a testament to his dedication to the land and innovative farming practices.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Although Tyler is not a full-time farmer, his passion for keeping his ancestors’ farmland active and away from development continues to provide inspiration. His approach to grape growing is deeply rooted in sustainable practices. Being close to the Chesapeake Bay, Tyler emphasizes the importance of sustainable agriculture to protect the local environment. He was inspired by the Norton grape’s ability to thrive with minimal intervention and produce a variety of delicious and unique styles of wine. He is able to successfully farm without the use of synthetic fungicides, herbicides and insecticides. Through canopy management, permanent under vine cover, and the strict timing of vineyard activities he is able to express his farms unique flavors through these grapes. The flexibility and hardiness Norton allows aligns perfectly with his eco-friendly philosophy and farming techniques.
Unique Growing Conditions
Long Beach Farms benefits from its location along the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, where early frost threats are minimal, and the growing season is extended compared to other parts of Maryland. The soil and growing conditions in Bowleys Quarters mirror parts of southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore, providing a unique microclimate for viticulture. Consistent diurnal temperatures due to proximity to the bay allows Norton normally high acid to ripen out, which leads to a more balanced chemistry at harvest thanks to the waters influence.
A Love for Maryland Viticulture
Tyler has been a part of Maryland’s grape-growing community for 14 years. His favorite aspect of growing grapes in Maryland is the diversity of grape varieties that can be successfully cultivated. He appreciates the unique challenges and rewards that come with Maryland’s varied climate and looks forward to the progress made by both new and experienced growers.
Inspiration and Advice
Tyler’s initial foray into viticulture was fueled by his love for Cabernet Sauvignon, though his attempts to grow it in 2011 were less than successful. However, his passion for wine remains strong, and he admires those who successfully cultivate this challenging variety in Maryland. Tyler advises aspiring grape growers to do their homework, engage with experienced growers, and, most importantly, to be authentic in their approach.
Beyond the Vineyard
When not tending to his vineyard, Tyler enjoys a variety of hobbies that connect him with nature and community. He also enjoys the waterfront and spending time anyway he can get on the water. He believes that farming is not just about the crops but also about fostering a sense of community and preserving the land for future generations.
I highly encourage everyone to visit Long Beach Farms to experience the fruits of Tyler’s dedication and hard work firsthand. Give them a follow on Instagram and Facebook!
