The President’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2023, which begins on October 1, 2022, was released on Monday, March 28, 2022. The budget proposal for the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) includes $1.9 billion for research projects of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), $1.105 billion for agricultural pest and disease programs, $9.8 billion for the Federal Crop insurance program, and $2.1 billion for mitigating wildfire risk. Smoke and Wine Grapes: Responding to Risk

Wildfire has dramatically increased the risks for grape growers in the West. Smoke concerns following California fires in 2021 led to a raft of grape rejections by wineries, in part due to mushy language in contracts written before wildfires were such a threat. And the lack of a reliable standard lab test for smoke taint bedevils wineries and growers alike. Read full article.
